CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF BALENCIAGA, DEMNA GVASALIA, RELEASED THE SUMMER 2022 COLLECTION “RED CARPET” AT LE THEÂTRE DU CHÂTELET IN PARIS. THE SHOW RELEASED AT THE PREMIERE OF THE SIMPSONS SHORT FILM, A BALENCIAGA-ED VERSION OF THE ANIMATION, DIRECTED BY DAVID SILVERMAN. GUESTS PAUSED ON THE RED CARPET FOR A 64-LOOK PHOTO OP BEFORE ENTERING THE THEATER.

THE COLLECTION, “A WARDROBE OF STREETWEAR, DAYWEAR, TAILORING, ELEGANT EVENINGWEAR, AND PHOTO-COUTURE PIECES,” EXPANDED INTO UNDEFINED CATEGORIES. GUESTS, INCLUDING BALENCIAGA MODELS, FRIENDS, AND TEAM MEMBERS, WERE INVITED TO WEAR THE COLLECTION AT THE HOLLYWOOD-STYLE EVENT. IN A “SERIES OF ROLE REVERSALS,” THE AUDIENCE OF THE SIMPSONS SHORT FILM ARE THE LEADING GUESTS IN THE COLLECTION.

LOOK 1, OPENED BY MODEL, BRONTE COATES, PRESENTED A DISPROPORTIONATELY OVERSIZED BALL GOWN LACED IN BOUFFANT TIERS OF BLACK.

LOOK 63, CLOSED BY MODEL, BRONTE  COATES, PRESENTED AN ULTRA-SLIM NECK-TO-TOE BODY SUIT FEATURED ON CHARACTER, MADAME WU, IN THE SIMPSONS SHORT FILM.

AFTER THE RED CARPET, GUESTS WERE ESCORTED INTO THE THEATER TO VIEW THE ANIMATION.

A PIANO OF ERIK SATIE’S “GYMNOPÉDIE NO. 1” COMPOSITION PLAYED AS THE FILM BEGAN. IT IS NEW YEAR’S DAY IN SPRINGFIELD WITH MARGE’S BIRTHDAY TEN MONTHS AWAY. “PLENTY OF TIME,” HOMER CHUCKLED.

TEN MONTHS PASSED IN TEN SECONDS TO OCTOBER 2ND AND HOMER WAS WITHOUT A GIFT FOR MARGE. HE ENTERED THE BEDROOM. SHE IS ASLEEP WITH A MAGAZINE TURNED TO A “LOVE IS FOR EVERYONE ... BALENCIAGA” ADVERTISEMENT  WITH HER WORDS “SOMEDAY ...” HANDWRITTEN OVER THE AD.

THE AD PICTURED AN EVENING GOWN IN GREEN. EXAGGERATED SHOULDERS WITH AN ULTRA-SLIM SKIN-TIGHT MATERIAL  STRETCHED DOWN THE ARM INTO A GLOVE, AND DOWN THE LEG INTO A PUMP. THE GOWN WRAPPED INTO A LOOSE-FITTED FRONT SLIT SKIRT BELOW THE PLUNGE NECKLINE.

“I’VE ALWAYS LOVED THE FRENCH,” HOMER SAID. HE EMAILED “BALENCIAGA-GA” TO “...SEND ME THE CHEAPEST THING WITH YOUR LABEL ON IT?” TO SURPRISE MARGE FOR HER BIRTHDAY WITH “...EVEN JUST THE TAG?”

THE PACKAGE WAS DELIVERED WITH THE GOWN PICTURED IN THE AD. MARGE GASPED AFTER OPENING THE DOOR TO A BALENCIAGA BOX WRAPPED IN RIBBON. SHE TRIED THE DRESS ON. “I’VE NEVER SEEN HER SO HAPPY,” HOMER SAID. “I DON’T CARE IF THIS COSTS 88 DOLLARS.”

MOMENTS LATER, HOMER HEAVED AFTER HE SAW THE 19,000 EURO PRICE TAG. MARGE IMMEDIATELY KNEW THE GOWN MUST BE RETURNED, BUT SHE “JUST WANNA WEAR IT ONCE.”

SHE SENDS THE GOWN BACK (NOT BEFORE A COMEDIC STROLL AROUND THE TOWN) WITH A NOTE “I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE 30 MINUTES OF FEELING JUST A LITTLE SPECIAL.”

AFTER READING HER HEARTFELT NOTE, DEMNA GVASALIA DECIDED TO FLY THE CITIZENS OF SPRINGFIELD TO PARIS FOR “REAL PEOPLE” TO MODEL IN HIS SHOW. THE SHOW FEATURED LOOKS (AND PEOPLE) FROM REAL BALENCIAGA COLLECTIONS AND CAMPAIGNS.

THE FILM FEATURED 40 LOOKS. AN ANIMATED KIM KARDASHIAN AND KANYE WEST SAT FRONT ROW NEXT TO JUSTIN BIEBER WITH ANNA WINTOUR NEARBY. HOMER, MARGE, SHERRI AND TERRI MODELED LOOKS FROM SPRING 2020, LISA AND THE BABY MODELED LOOKS FROM SPRING 2022, WITH CHARACTERS IN OTHER COLLECTIONS, INCLUDING WAYLON SMITHERS IN A RED BALL GOWN FROM FALL 2020.

FOR MARGE’S FINAL BIRTHDAY REQUEST, THE FILM ENDED WITH A FRENCH KISS AND BART SINGING “LA MER” TO HER ON A BOAT.
